PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Simmons University women's soccer team was defeated by host Johnson & Wales University, 5-0, this evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex. The Sharks fall to 0-5-1 overall and 0-2-0 in league play, while the Wildcats improve to 2-5-0 and 1-0-0.

Junior midfielder Olivia Cairrao (Bristol, R.I.) connected on a pair of goals and an assist to lead Johnson & Wales.

The Wildcats dominated possession with a 32-7 shot advantage and 6-0 margin in corner kicks.

First year Izabella Warren (Hillsboro, N.H.) led the Simmons offense with a pair of shots.

Johnson & Wales set the tone early, scoring first in the 13th minute on an own goal attributed to the Sharks. The Wildcats kept the pressure on the Sharks, adding to their lead with another goal coming just over two minutes later. After dribbling outside the 18-yard box on the far-side of the field, sophomore forward Jordan Restivo (Utica, N.Y.) fired a 25-yard bullet to the back of the net for the second Wildcat goal.

Johnson & Wales turned up its offensive effort in the second stanza with three more markers. Just under three minutes into the second half, Cairrao scored her first goal of the season to give Johnson & Wales a 3-0 lead.

In the 50th minute, the Sharks keeper rejected a penalty kick opportunity from Restivo, but the Simmons net-minder was not able to corral the ball. Cairrao scooped up the rebound and drilled the fourth Wildcat goal. Cairrao connected with senior midfielder Cat Nolan (Center Moriches, N.Y.) for the fifth and final Wildcat goal in the 71st minute.

First year goalie Melanie Colman (Holliston, Mass.) matched her career high with 10 saves for the Sharks, while senior keeper Colleen Lynch (New Milford, Conn.) posted her 25th career shutout with three saves for Johnson & Wales.

Simmons returns to action on Friday, September 20 when it hosts GNAC foe Albertus Magnus College on Daly Field at 3:00 p.m., while JWU travels to Springfield, Mass. to take on Western New England University on September 21 at 6:00 p.m.
