Soccer Defeats Visiting Rivier, 4-0; Halle Records Second Shutout, First Collegiate Goal for Friedman

BOSTON, Mass. – Four different players scored and freshman goalkeeper Casey Halle (Watertown, Mass.) recorded her second shutout of the season to lead the Simmons College women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over visiting Rivier University this evening in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match on Winsor Field in Boston, Mass. The Sharks increase their win and shutout streak to two games and improve to 3-4-2 overall, including 2-1-0 in league play, while the Raiders fall to 5-4-0 and 0-3-0.

Simmons, which has not allowed a goal in its last 192:54, controlled most of the action, owning a 26-11 shot advantage and a 7-1 count on corner kicks.

The Sharks wasted no time cracking the scoring column with a pair of quick goals in the opening two minutes of the match. First year forward Kali DeNisi (Killingworth, Conn.) put the home team on the board just 87 seconds into the game when she fired a point blank shot just over the keeper and into the right side of the net from inside the box for a 1-0 edge. Classmate Erin Montambault (Watertown, Conn.) followed just 28 seconds later. The forward took a feed from junior forward Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.) in the box and beat a drawn out Rivier keeper with a shot into the right corner for her team-leading sixth goal of the year at 1:54 for a 2-0 lead.

Simmons tacked on another score prior to the end of the opening half when first year back Gabriella Davis (Duxbury, Mass.) served a corner kick that went off the keeper's hands and onto the head of junior midfielder Ali Berkman (Natick, Mass.) for her first tally of the season at the 24:45 mark. The helper was the first point of Davis' collegiate career.

Sophomore back Tasha Friedman (Phoenix, Ariz.) capped the scoring for the Sharks with her first career goal coming with just 68 ticks left in the match. Junior midfielder Victoria Russo (Brainree, Mass.) played a ball from inside the box to the top of the circle, where Friedman blasted a shot from 25 yards out that sailed over the outstretched fingertips of the Raiders' keeper in Friedman's first match of the year.

Halle turned away all six shots she faced to earn the victory for Simmons, while freshman goalie Lauren Goodspeed (Merrimack, N.H.) made eight saves for Rivier.

The Sharks will be in action again on Wednesday, October 1 when they host GNAC foe Lasell College at 8:00 p.m. on Winsor Field, while the Raiders head to Paxton, Mass. on the same night to face Anna Maria College at 6:00 p.m.
