Simmons Falls 3-0 To Nationally Ranked Union

The Sharks are eager to embark on the 2011 season after a challenging fall in 2010. While remaining competitive in every contest, the team fell short in the final minutes in several games, which kept them out of post-season play. The team graduated seven seniors all of whom were integral players and contributors to the program?s success. Their talent and leadership will be missed, but the opportunity to have fresh faces and talent on the field is sure to keep the Sharks competitive this season.

The Simmons Soccer team will travel to Troy, N.Y. this weekend to compete in the RPI Invitational with Union College, Buffalo State University, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at the East Campus Stadium. The tournament hosts will provide live stats for all four games of the tournament as well as live video pay-per-view for the Sharks game against RPI on Saturday, September 10 at 3:00 p.m. The Sharks face Union College on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.

Union took control early and capitalized in the 8th minute on a goal by Mollie Gilchrist (Johnsonville, NY/Hoosic Valley Central). Junior Jennifer Mansfield (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay) started the play as she carried the ball down the right flank and fired a shot that careened off the left post.

Sharks netminder Ashley Wheeler (Nashua, NH/Nashua) made the stop, but the rebound squirted out to Gilchrist, who buried it for the 1-0 advantage. The Dutchwomen continued to attack the Simmons end and it paid off as Gilchrist brought the ball down the left side and sent a perfect cross to the middle for Mansfield, who knocked it in easily in the 21st minute.

In the second half, the Sharks pushed their way into the offensive zone and saw their best chance of the game come in the 67th minute as sophomore Kristyn Heuslein (Manchester, NH/Central) fired a shot from the right side from 20-yards out. Despite the angle, Union keeper Mia Simone (Rexford, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) made the clutch save near the post.

Rookie Whitney Bickford (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) sealed the victory for the Dutchwomen in the 82nd minute as she headed the ball in past Wheeler off a corner kick from Mansfield for the 3-0 margin. Wheeler recorded six saves for the Sharks.
