Soccer Captures Season Opener vs. Wentworth, 4-2

Simmons soccer took command of their season and home opener on Tuesday evening, taking a 4-2 victory against Wentworth. Anna Stella (Sharon, Mass.) scored first for the Sharks 2:39 into the match off a Brooke MacKenzie (Mansfield, Mass.) assist.

Wentworth answered back five minutes later with a goal from Sarah Norkiewicz and a Jen Reichert assist. The action remained quiet for the rest of the first half; both teams failing to find the back of the goal and leaving the score tied at 1-1 at halftime.

Simmons senior Emily DiNuovo (Palmer, Mass.) slipped another shot past Wentworth goalkeeper Katherine Matthews with an assist from freshman Justine Beauchamp (Exeter, N.H.) just 36 seconds into the second half to bring the score to 2-1. Wentworth answered with a goal from Sarah Norkiewicz following up a Lucy Brown shot to the crossbar in the sixtieth minute to tie things up 2-2.

The Sharks hit twice more with two unassisted goals in the 75th and 76th minutes from MacKenzie and freshman Ally Ayotte (Litchfield, N.H.) to bring the score to 4-2, with Simmons taking the victory on the night.

Simmons goalkeeper Rachel Elliot (Amherst, N.H.) had one save, as the Sharks out-shot the Leopards 20-14.

Simmons will travel to Pine Manor on Wednesday, September 2 at 4:00 PM for their Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener.
