Fifth seeded Simmons Soccer upset fourth seed Emerson College, 3-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament First Round game at Emerson's Rotch Field on Sunday. The Sharks rode two goals from freshman Justine Beauchamp (Exeter, N.H.) to take the victory and advance to Wednesday's semifinal game at Saint Joseph's Maine.

Beauchamp scored in the 12th minute as she took a rebound off a clear attempt by Emerson keeper Shayna Reich, and sent the ball into the middle of the open net.

Despite a 13-4 advantage in first half shots, Emerson could not solve the Sharks' goalkeeper Rachel Elliott (Amherst, N.H.) who made seven first half saves. While the Lions were unable to score, Anna Stella (Sharon, Mass.) made her only shot of the day count as she scored on a breakaway down the right side off a steal in the 44th minute to give Simmons a 2-0 halftime edge.

The Sharks had the better second half play, outshooting Emerson 7-5.  Both keepers managed three saves in the half, but Beauchamp made the final Shark tally on a penalty kick following a hand ball in the box off a free kick in the 83rd minute.

Emerson held an 18-10 edge in shots over Simmons, and the teams each had four corner kick attempts. Elliot ended up with 10 saves for the Sharks, while Reich had four in the Lion net.

The Sharks (10-5-3) will take on top seeded St. Joseph's Maine on Wednesday, November 4, at a time to be announced. Emerson concluded its season with a 10-8-1 record.
