Simmons Defeated by Emmanuel, 2-1, in Overtime

The Simmons College soccer team fell to Emmanuel, 2-1, in overtime on Wednesday night at the Winsor School Field. Sophomore midfielder Anna Stella (Sharon, Mass.) scored the lone goal for the Sharks, but it was not enough to stop the Saints. With the loss, Simmons falls to 2-6-2 overall (GNAC, 1-2) while Emmanuel improves to 4-3 overall (GNAC, 2-0).

The Simmons College soccer team fell to Emmanuel, 2-1, in overtime on Wednesday night at the Winsor School Field. Sophomore midfielder Anna Stella (Sharon, Mass.) scored the lone goal for the Sharks, but it was not enough to stop the Saints. With the loss, Simmons falls to 2-6-2 overall (GNAC, 1-2) while Emmanuel improves to 4-3 overall (GNAC, 2-0).

The Sharks charged the Saints defense to start off the game, scoring Simmons' first goal of the night eight minutes in to the match.  At the 8:27 mark, freshman defender Mandy Walke (Danvers, Mass.) sent a crossing pass from the left side to Stella who fired a shot over the head of the goalie from 5 yards out. 

At the 73:44 mark, Emmanuel junior Kate McKenna   (Holyoke, Mass.) slid the ball into the top right corner of the net to tie the game, 1-1, sophomore Amber Di Nucci (Assonet, Mass.) was credited with the assist.  This was the last goal that would be scored for the next 17 minutes. 

One minute and fifty three seconds in to the overtime period Di Nucci maneuvered her way around two Simmons defenders and launched a shot from fifteen yards out, which soared into the upper left corner of the net for the win.  The goal was Di Nucci's sixth of the season. 

Simmons goalie Rachel Elliott (Amherst, N.H.) made 10 saves for the Sharks while Laureyn Furtney (Barrington, N.H.) registered eight saves for the Saints.

The Sharks return to action on Saturday, September 27 when they travel to Standish, Maine to play conference foe St. Joseph's (Maine) at 1:00 p.m.
