Cottam Leads Lacrosse in 13-12 Overtime Loss to Lasell; Bragg Becomes Fifth Shark to Score 100 Career Goals

BOSTON, Mass. -- Senior midfielder Mallory Cottam (Hope, R.I.) scored four goals and added an assist to lead the Simmons University women's lacrosse team in a 13-12 overtime loss to visiting Lasell College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action this evening at Daly Field in Boston, Mass. The Sharks fall to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in league play, while the Lasers improve to 10-3 and 5-2.

BOSTON, Mass. -- Senior midfielder Mallory Cottam (Hope, R.I.) scored four goals and added an assist to lead the Simmons University women's lacrosse team in a 13-12 overtime loss to visiting Lasell College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action this evening at Daly Field in Boston, Mass. The Sharks fall to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in league play, while the Lasers improve to 10-3 and 5-2.

Matthews' score came just 30 seconds into the extra period for Lasell, which trailed by as many as four goals in the second half. The Lasers scored the final three markers in just under nine minutes to close out the half with a tied score, before Matthews' game-winner for the victory.

Senior midfielder Mallory Cottam (Hope, R.I.) tallied five points, including four goals in addition to winning a game-high eight draws, picking up three ground balls and causing a turnover for Simmons. Sophomore midfielder Molly Reinhold (Mystic, Conn.) scored three goals and assisted on another, while scooping up a pair of ground balls and coming up with three draw controls. Senior attacker Missie Maiewski (Northampton, Mass.) netted three goals and picked up a ground ball. Senior midfielder Elena Bragg (Belmont, Mass.) scored her only goal with 2:22 left in the opening half to become the fifth player in school history to reach 100 career goals. Sophomore goalie Cat Cross (Beverly, Mass.) stopped nine shots for the Sharks.

Sophomore attacker Kellie Matthews (Falmouth, Mass.) matched her career high in points with five goals and a pair of assists to go with a ground ball and a draw control for the Lasers, while senior middie Jordan McComb (Cumberland, R.I.) netted three goals to go with an assist, six draw controls, four ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Junior midfielder Amanda DiLeonardo (West Haven, Conn.) contributed with two goals, an assist and two draw controls and first year midfielder Erin Kriger (Burlington, Mass.) found the back of the net twice and added a caused turnover. Junior goalie Morgan Choquet (Woonsocket, R.I.) recorded a season-high 14 saves to earn the win for the visitors. 

Junior midfielder Kingsley Richards (Lexington, Mass.) took a feed from Bragg and scored with 9:43 showing on the second half clock to give Simmons a 12-9 margin. It was the home team's final goal of the night, before Lasell scored three unanswered markers. Senior attacker Vanessa Pino (Methuen, Mass.) sparked the Lasers' comeback with a free position shot for her only goal to cut the deficit to 12-10 with 8:50 left in the second stanza. McComb scored her team-leading 47th marker of the year to make it a one-goal game at the 3:14 mark, before Matthews scored 80 seconds later to pull Lasell even at 12-12 with 1:54 left in regulation. 

Choquet turned away a pair of shots in the final 70 seconds of the second half, including a free-position opportunity from Reinhold with just 11 ticks left in the contest. Matthews executed her free position shot just 30 seconds into the overtime period to give the Lasers a one-goal victory. 

Lasell scored four of the first six goals, including two from DiLeonardo, over the opening 14 minutes of play to take a 4-2 lead. Matthews later scored at the 10:42 mark of the opening half to give the Lasers a 5-3 lead, before the Sharks ripped off five straight goals, including two from Reinhold, to give the home team an 8-5 margin. Kriger scored just 26 seconds after Bragg's milestone goal to cut the deficit to 8-6 for Lasell at the intermission. 

Reinhold and Maiewski netted the first two goals of the second half to give Simmons its biggest lead of the night at 10-6, just over five minutes into the second stanza. McComb tallied the Lasers' first marker of the second half at 20:25 to begin a 3-1 run that included a player down goal from Matthews to pull the visitors to within 12-9 with 11:57 showing on the second half clock. 

Simmons returns to action on Saturday, April 13 when it travels to Nashua, N.H. to take on Rivier University at 1:00 p.m., while Lasell hosts University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) on the same day at 12:00 p.m.
