Lacrosse Defeated at Regis, 9-5

WESTON, Mass. -- The Simmons University women's lacrosse team was unable to overcome a three-goal halftime deficit and fell to host Regis (Mass.), 9-5, this afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at Regis Stadium in Weston, Mass. The Sharks fall to 4-3 overall, including 2-2 in league play, while the Pride improve to 4-1 and 3-0.

The Sharks fall to 4-3 overall, including 2-2 in league play, while the Pride improve to 4-1 and 3-0.

Seniors Missie Maiewski (Northampton, Mass.) and Elena Bragg (Belmont, Mass.) each netted a pair of goals for Simmons, while classmate Mallory Cottam (Hope, R.I.) also added a marker. Bragg and Cottam each added two ground balls, a pair of draw controls and caused two turnovers, while Maiewski added a ground ball. Sophomore midfielder Molly Reinhold (Mystic, Conn.) collected two points with a pair of assists in addition to picking up three ground balls and winning two draws. Sophomore goalie Cat Cross (Beverly, Mass.) stopped eight shots for the Sharks.

Senior midfielder Alyssa Kelly (Lee, Mass.) led Regis with four points on three goals and an assist to go with three ground balls, four draw controls and a caused turnover. junior attacker Kerri Anselmo (Natick, Mass.) contributed with a pair of goals and an assist and added a ground ball. Junior midfielder Brooke Ross (Hanover, Mass.) netted a pair of goals, picked up three ground balls, won a draw control and caused a turnover. Junior defender Maddy Rodriguez (Amherst, Mass.) helped bolster the Pride defense with a match-high four caused turnovers and five ground balls. Sophomore goalie Brittany McPherson (Lynn, Mass.) was outstanding in net, making 11 saves for Regis.

Reinhold found Maiewski for the game's first score to give Simmons a 1-0 edge at the 16:50 mark of the opening half. The Pride defense held the Sharks without a tally for the remainder of the half, while the Regis offense scored four times. Kelly tied the contest with 10:52 left in the opening half for the Pride. Regis scored two more goals in a span of 93 seconds when junior attacker Bridget Dowling (Hanover, Mass.) found the back of the net for her second goal and sophomore attacker Jordyn Ringuette (Colchester, Conn.) tallied her seventh marker with 6:12 to play in the period for a 3-1 margin. sophomore middie Rachel Nadeau (Coventry, Conn.) fed Anselmo with 3:28 showing on the first half clock for the final goal of the half and a 4-1 Pride lead.

Regis opened the second stanza with the first two goals of the period and a 6-1 cushion. Anselmo scored her 10th goal of the year and Kelly followed 88 seconds later to give the Pride a five-goal lead with 26:50 remaining in the game. Maiewski netted her second goal of the afternoon and eighth of the season with 24:04 left in the half to cut the deficit to 6-2 for Simmons.

Ross and Bragg traded goals to keep the contest a four-goal difference, before Kelly and Ross each scored to give Regis its largest lead of the day at 9-3 with 10:53 to go in the game. The Sharks scored the final two goals of the game in the final 40 seconds to pull them to within 9-5, but it was as close as they would come. Junior midfielder Amina Mansouri (Revere, Mass.) assisted Bragg for her 14th goal and Cottam tallied her 10th goal of the season on a free position shot with four ticks left in the game.

Simmons returns to action on Wednesday, March 27 when it hosts Saint Joseph's College (Maine) at 7:00 p.m., while the Pride travel to Dartmouth, Mass. to take on University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on March 25 at 7:00 p.m.
