  • Three Sharks Named to 2012 NFCA Division III All-Region Teams

    STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Simmons Softball senior Amanda Gould (Kingston, N.H.), sophomore Emily Cunningham (Cotuit, Mass.) and freshman Lauren Backhaus (Windsor, Conn.) were all named to the 2012 Division III Northeast All-Region Team announced Monday by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

    GAME FIVE: BRANDEIS 3, SIMMONS 1 WALTHAM, Mass. -- In the opening game of the day, Brandeis pitcher Caroline Miller earned her 16th win of the season by holding Simmons to two hits over the first five innings. The Sharks tested Miller in third when she gave up a one-out single to Simmons catcher Victoria Luongo (Medford, Mass.) and issued a walk to leadoff hitter Hannah Cunningham (Cotuit, Mass.), but that was the only Shark runner to advance past first base against Miller. Cailin Pagel (Dorchester, Mass.) singled in the fifth, but was cut down trying to steal by rookie catcher Cori Coleman.
  • No. 7 Simmons to Play Top-Seeded Brandeis in Elimination Game Sunday

    WALTHAM, Mass. – On the first day of action at the 2012 Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III New England Softball Tournament championship round at Brandeis, third-seeded Endicott College defeated No. 7 Simmons, 9-1, and the top-seeded Judges, 6-1, to advance to tomorrow’s championship round. Simmons defeated Rivier, 6-0, to stay alive in the tournament’s first elimination game, after Brandeis had opened the day with a 7-5 win over the fifth-seeded Raiders.

    BOSTON, Mass. -- Sophomore Emily Cunningham (Cotuit, Mass.) was named Great Northeast Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Year announced Wednesday by the conference. Cunningham, who also received First Team All-Conference honors, batted .472 on the season and led the GNAC in home runs with nine and slugging percentage at 0.862, and was second in the conference in RBIs with 45.
  • Backhaus Named Rookie of the Year; Sharks Receive Four Nods on GNAC Softball All-Conference Team

    BOSTON, MASS. -- Simmons pitcher Lauren Backhaus (Windsor, Conn.) was named Great Northeast Athletic Conference Softball Rookie of the Year announced by the conference Monday morning. At the conclusion of the regular season, Backhaus was ranked fourth nationally in Division III in shutouts, 14th in strikeouts per inning, and 18th in total strikeouts. Backhaus led the league in strikeouts for the regular season and finished her rookie season with 13-8 record, pitching 132 innings with a 1.86 ERA.

    STANDISH, Maine -- #3 Simmons softball defeated the #6 Norwich University Cadets 1-0, and fell to the #2 Saint Joseph’s College Monks Friday afternoon at the Richard W. Bailey Field at Saint Joseph’s College. With the split, the Sharks drop into the losers bracket of the double elimination Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament.

    BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons softball took the #3 seed with a conference record of 19-7 for the second year in a row announced today by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. The Sharks edged out Johnson and Wales University, who finished with the same record, with a sweep of the Wildcats during the regular season to break the tie.

    NASHUA, N.H. -- Simmons softball split with the Rivier College Raiders Saturday afternoon losing the first game 13-5 and rebounding to take the second 7-6 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action. Emily Cunningham (Cotuit, Mass.) hit two home runs and Hannah Cunningham (Cotuit, Mass.) added another as the Sharks completed their regular season with an overall record of 23-14, and 19-7 in the conference.

    CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Simmons softball split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader against Pine Manor College Friday afternoon, shutting out the Gators in the first game 3-0 before falling in the second, 3-2 in the seventh inning. During the break, the Sharks honored their two seniors, Sami Hodgkins (Westminster, Vt.) and Amanda Gould (Kingston, N.H.) for their accomplishments and contributions to the program.

The Lasers saw a 7th inning rally fall short as they lost 4-3 in game one of the doubleheader, and then Sharks freshman Lauren Backhaus (Windsor, Conn.) twirled a one-hit gem to defeat the hosts 3-0 in the second game of the day.

Sharks sophomore Emily Cunningham (Cotuit, Mass.) went three for four including a solo home run and senior Amanda Gould (Kingston, N.H.) added two runs and three RBI’s to lead the Sharks to victory.

    CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT took an early 1-0 lead over Simmons College before the Sharks struck for two runs in the fourth inning and tacked on three more in the fifth to down the Engineers, 5-1, in non-conference softball action on Tuesday afternoon. The game was the season opener for Tech while Simmons improves to 4-7 with the win.

The Sharks (1-5 overall) were led by Senior Amanda Gould (Kingston, N.H.) who went six for seven and picked up four RBI’s on the day.
