Tennis Opens Spring Season Against Mount Holyoke

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Simmons tennis began its spring season indoors against Mount Holyoke on Wednesday afternoon. The Lyons were able to get the best out of the Sharks with a 9-0 win, but there were solid performances from up and down the Shark lineup.

Juniors Leah Bonis and Samantha Margolin gave Mount Holyoke's third doubles tandem Nikki Cheng and Claudia Gonzalez-Vaz a battle before being edged out, 8-6. In second doubles, the All-GNAC first team recipient Olga Zhizhin and junior Libby Weed fought valiantly against the Lyons' Shweta Kiran Cavale and Hannah Middleton.

In the singles portion of the day, first-year Emily Lopez nearly forced a third set against Chisato Kimura in six singles. Competing in just her second college match, Lopez dropped the first set of sixth singles, 6-1, but in the second set, she gave Kimura a fight before falling, 6-4. Bonis also was solid in second singles against Kiran Cavale, but fell in two sets, 6-2, 6-0.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • First-year Emily Lopez competed in just her second collegiate match and made Chisato Kimura work for Mount Holyoke's two-set win in sixth singles.
  • Juniors Leah Bonis and Samantha Margolin were solid together in third doubles, taking Nikki Cheng and Claudia Gonzalez-Vaz to 14 games.
