Sweep of SIngles Propels Tennis Over USJ, 7-2

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Returning to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play, Simmons tennis (6-3, 4-1 GNAC) earned a 7-2 win over the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) (2-5, 1-3 GNAC), on Saturday afternoon.

The Sharks found their backs against the wall early, dropping doubles to the Blue Jays, 2-1. Juniors Leah Bonis and Libby Weed secured the lone Sharks doubles win with an 8-0 sweep of Julia Michaud and Elaina Griffiths in third doubles. However, singles was a different story.

The Sharks took over in singles, sweeping the Blue Jays, 6-0. First-year Avery Halloran started singles off with a two-set, (6-1, 6-0) victory over Michaud in fifth singles before junior Sam Margolin knocked off senior Maria Porth in sixth singles (6-0, 6-1).

In addition to winning their doubles match, Bonis and Weed both earned victories in the second and fourth singles. Bonis defeated junior Emily Kerr, 6-2, 6-3, while Weed won in fourth singles, 6-4, 6-1.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Juniors Leah Bonis and Libby Weed won both of their matches on the day. They earned the 8-0 sweep together in third doubles, before each claiming second and fourth singles, respectively.
  • First-year Avery Halloran ignited the comeback with a two-set win in fifth singles (6-1, 6-0).
  • Junior Sam Margolin earned her first singles win of the season, defeating Maria Porth in sixth singles, 6-4, 6-1.
