Tennis Begins Conference Play with Win Over Albertus Magnus

NEW HAVEN, CONN. – Simmons tennis (3-1, 1-0 GNAC) picked up its third straight win and opened Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action following an 8-1 road victory over Albertus Magnus College (1-8, 0-1 GNAC), Saturday afternoon.

The Sharks began the day strong with a sweep of doubles. Third doubles tandem Leila Spires and Sara Fucillo blanked Cara Dominello and Mitchell-Warren, 8-0, while Avery Halloran and Samantha Margolin won second doubles, 8-3. Olga Zhizhin and Leah Bonis completed the sweep with an 8-3 win in first doubles.

In the singles portion of the competition, Simmons wasted little time picking up five of six matches. Avery Halloran continued her impressive performance with a two-set, 6-0, 6-0, shutout of Dominello in fifth singles, while Sara Mariski blanked Julianna Sigit in third singles, 6-0, 6-0.  

Leah Bonis earned a solid two-set second singles win over Naomi Rose Allen, while Libby Weed and Megan McKeever picked up two-set wins in fourth and sixth singles, respectively.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Avery Halloran's fifth singles shutout was her third career singles victory, improving to 3-0 on the season.
  • The Sharks swept the double competition for the first time all season, led by an 8-0 shutout by third doubles duo Leila Spires and Sara Fuccillo
