Tennis Falls at Endicott, 8-1, in Season Finale

BEVERLY, Mass. -- The Simmons University women's tennis team was defeated by host Endicott College, 8-1, today at the South Campus Tennis Courts in Beverly, Mass. The Sharks conclude their season at 5-13, while the Gulls finish the 2018-19 campaign at 13-7.

Simmons gained its only point in doubles action, while Endicott won all six singles matches.

The senior tandem of Michelle Medici (South Portland, Maine) and Paola Rios (Miami, Fla.) won at second doubles for the Sharks with an 8-6 decision over the Gulls pairing of sophomore Cameron Foley (Lynnfield, Mass.) and first year Cara McCormack (Worcester, Mass.). The win rounded out the doubles action with Simmons trailing the match, 2-1. Sophomore Gretta Hartman (Glastonbury, Conn.) combined with first year Justine Hoover (Wallingford, Conn.) to defeat Sharks juniors Nickie Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam / Saint Joseph Preparatory (Mass.)) and Marissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass.), 8-2, at first doubles. Endicott's sophomore duo of Clare O'Keefe (Lutz, Fla.) and Sarah Pertile (Edgartown, Mass.) downed Simmons first years Sarah Mariski (Portland, Maine) and Megan McKeever (Stamford, Conn.) at number three doubles, 8-4.

Hartman won the first singles match of the day for the Gulls, dropping just one game in each of her sets at number two singles against Nguyen to score a 6-1, 6-1 decision, while O'Keefe turned in a 6-2, 6-2 effort against Mariski at fifth singles to give the Endicott a 4-1 lead. The Gulls clinched the dual match victory with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at third singles by McCormack over Medici. Hoover registered a 6-3, 6-1 win at number one singles for the Gulls over Rios and Foley downed Johnson at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-2, for a 7-1 Endicott advantage. Sophomore Carrie St. Peter (Chester, N.H.) battled to three sets for the Sharks at sixth singles, but was unable to overcome sophomore Emily Licciardi (Haverhill, Mass.), who pulled out a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 victory for the home team.
