Tennis Falls at New Haven, 7-0

MILFORD, Conn. -- The Simmons University women's tennis team was defeated by host Division II University of New Haven, 7-0, this afternoon at the Milford Tennis Club in Milford, Conn. The Sharks fall to 5-12 on the season, while the Chargers improve to 12-11 in their season finale.

New Haven swept doubles play to gain the doubles point, before winning all six singles matches for the remaining six points.

Sophomore Carrie St. Peter (Chester, N.H.) won seven games at number six singles in a 7-5, 6-2 loss to Chargers senior Ashley Varrone (Shelton, Conn.), while senior Michelle Medici (South Portland, Maine) took five games in a 6-1, 6-4 defeat at the hands of New Haven senior Caitlyn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y.) at number three singles.

Junior Angela Mercurio (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and senior Lauryn Burridge (Center Moriches, N.Y.) each scored 6-2, 6-2 straight set victories at fourth and fifth singles, respectively, over Simmons junior Marissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass.) and first year Sarah Mariski (Portland, Maine), respectively. New Haven sophomore Stephanie Gonzalez (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at number one singles over Sharks' junior Nickie Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam/Saint Joseph Preparatory (Mass.)). First year Nicole Mika (Staten Island, N.Y.) defeated Simmons senior Paola Rios (Miami, Fla.), 6-0, 6-2, at second singles.

Gonzalez and Mika teamed at number one doubles to take a 6-2 decision over Nguyen and Johnson, while junior Shelby Clyne (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) paired with Mercurio to post a 7-5 victory at second doubles over the Sharks duo of Rios and Medici. Junior Nicole Calabrese and Caitlyn Burridge also gained a win in doubles play for the Chargers, scoring a 6-4 count over Mariski and first year Megan McKeever (Stamford, Conn.).

Simmons returns to the courts on Sunday, April 28 when it travels to Beverly, Mass. to take on Endicott College in a 10:00 a.m. contest.
