WINTHROP, Mass. – Simmons College women's tennis playerMarissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week for the week of September 19-25, it was announced today by the league.

Johnson becomes the second player in as many weeks to earn Rookie of the Week honors for the Sharks. First year Jessica Schroedl (Staatsburg, N.Y.) was tabbed last week for Simmons.

In the Sharks' only match of the week, Johnson was crucial in the team's quest to extend their regular-season conference match win streak to 60 in a row. The Norwell High School graduate was a double-winner, recording her first collegiate win in singles action with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number three singles. Earlier in the match, she combined with classmate Nickie Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam/Saint Joseph Preparatory (Mass.)) for an 8-5 triumph at second doubles in a 5-4 dual match win over visiting Suffolk University on September 20.

For the season, Johnson has posted a combined record of 3-8, including 2-4 in doubles action and has played exclusively at third singles and number two doubles for Simmons.

The Sharks are currently 2-4 overall, including 2-0 in GNAC play and will be in action again on Tuesday, September 27 when they take on Wentworth Institute of Technology for a 4:00 p.m. match at Daly Courts in Brighton, Mass.
