Tennis Downed by Colby, 9-0

BOSTON, Mass. - The Simmons College women's tennis team was defeated by visiting Colby College, 9-0, this afternoon at Daly Courts in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks fall to 0-4 on the season, while the Mules improve to 2-0 with their second match of the day. The match followed the college's Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, which officially opened the Daly Athletics Complex this morning.

BOSTON, Mass. - The Simmons College women's tennis team was defeated by visiting Colby College, 9-0, this afternoon at Daly Courts in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks fall to 0-4 on the season, while the Mules improve to 2-0 with their second match of the day. The match followed the college's Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, which officially opened the Daly Athletics Complex this morning.

First year Mai Driesen (Fayetteville, N.Y.) won five games at fourth singles, but fell in the match, 6-3, 6-2 to sophomore Jamie Pine (Providence, R.I.) of Colby. Simmons first year Casey Wright (Merrimack, N.H.) took four games at sixth singles, but was also defeated, 6-0, 6-4, by senior Annie Morris (Wilmette, Ill.). 

Junior Maddie Lupone (New Canaan, Conn.) and Morris combined to win, 8-1, at number three doubles for Colby over the Simmons duo of Driesen and junior Mary Matthews (Wakefield, R.I.) to put the visitors on the board. Senior twin sisters Lydia and Gabriela Venditti (Camden, Maine) put together an 8-3 victory for the Mules over first year Jessica Schroedl (Staatsburg, N.Y.) and junior Olivia Lakes (Dorchester, Mass.) at first singles. The Colby sophomore duo of Emily Dyckman (Princeton, N.J.) and Pine earned an 8-1 win at second doubles over the Sharks' first year pairing of Marissa Johnson (Norwell, Mass.) and Nickie Nguyen (Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam/St. Joseph Prep (Mass.)) to give the Mules a 3-0 lead after doubles play. 

Lupone downed Lakes without dropping a game in a 6-0, 6-0 decision at number three singles to increase Colby's lead to 4-0, before Gabriela Venditti clinched the dual match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at second singles over Nguyen. Dyckman was also flawless at fifth singles with a 6-0, 6-0 effort over Simmons sophomore Michelle Medici (South Portland, Maine). Lydia Venditti picked up a 6-0 6-1 victory at number one singles over Schroedl for a 7-0 advantage for the visitors. 

Simmons returns to the court on Saturday, September 17 when it heads to Hartford, Conn. to open the Great Northeast Athletic Conference slate vs. University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) at 12:00 p.m., while the Mules host Thomas College in their home opener on September 11 at 10:00 a.m.
