Cokely Named GNAC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

WINTHROP, Mass. ? Simmons women?s tennis player Meg Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women?s Tennis Player of the Week for the week of October 5-11, it was announced today by the league. Cokely earns the honor for the fourth time in her career.

WINTHROP, Mass. – Simmons women's tennis player Meg Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of October 5-11, it was announced today by the league. Cokely earns the honor for the fourth time in her career. 

The award marks the third time that a Simmons College player has been selected this season. Junior Theresa Reinhard (Canton, Ohio) was also chosen for the weeks of August 31 to September 6 and September 14-20. 

Cokely was a combined 3-0 for the week, including 2-0 in singles play. The senior dropped just one game in singles action with a 6-1, 6-0 victory on October 7 vs. Johnson & Wales University at number two singles and turned in a 6-0, 6-0 effort at second singles vs. Albertus Magnus College on October 10. The Haverhill High School product was a double-winner vs. Johnson & Wales, combining with Reinhard at first doubles for an 8-6 victory. 

The Co-Captain is currently a combined 15-4 (.789) on the season, including 7-2 in singles play at number two and 8-2 in doubles action at the top spot. She has won three straight singles matches and has only been beaten in straight sets once this season. The senior has dropped fewer than four total games in six different singles wins this year, including three victories without losing a game. 

Cokely became the school's all-time leader in singles victories (51-20, .718) and combined wins (98-51, .658) this season and currently ranks third with 47 doubles victories. She was named the GNAC Rookie of the Year in 2012-13 and has been named to the GNAC First Team for singles play in all three of her seasons, while being selected to the First Team for doubles once and the Second Team twice. The senior has also been named to the ITA All-Academic Team twice. 

The Sharks are currently 6-5 on the season, including a perfect 5-0 in conference play and clinched the regular-season league crown for the eighth straight season on Saturday. Simmons has won 57 consecutive regular-season league matches and will finish out the conference slate today at Mount Ida College at 1:00 p.m.
