Cokely Becomes Combined Career Wins Leader for Tennis in 8-1 loss at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine - Senior Meg Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) won at number two singles in an 8-1 loss to host Colby College to give her 95 (49 singles, 46 doubles) combined wins and become the Simmons College women's tennis program's all-time victories leader. The Sharks fall to 4-5 on the season, while the Mules improve to 2-0.

WATERVILLE, Maine - Senior Meg Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) won at number two singles in an 8-1 loss to host Colby College to give her 95 (49 singles, 46 doubles) combined wins and become the Simmons College women's tennis program's all-time victories leader. The Sharks fall to 4-5 on the season, while the Mules improve to 2-0.

Cokely (5-2 singles, 7-2 doubles) won the first set over Colby first year Gabriela Venditti (Mercer Island, Wash.), 7-5, before dropping the second frame, 6-0, to even the match. The Captain rebounded to win the third and decisive set, 10-6, in pro-set form to gain the historic victory, giving her one more combined career win than Sabrina Salmela (2009-13). 

Cokely paired with junior Theresa Reinhard (Canton, Ohio) (4-3 singles, 7-2 doubles) in an 8-5 defeat to Venditti and her sister, Lydia Venditti, at number one doubles for the Mules. Reinhard was beaten in first singles action, 6-4, 6-2, by Lydia Venditti.

The senior tandem of Katie Crowley (Reading, Mass.) (4-4 singles, 3-5 doubles) and Rachael Downey (Groveland, Mass.) (3-5 singles, 2-6 doubles) fell at second doubles to Colby sophomore Maddie Lupone (New Canaan, Conn.) and first year Aleks Piibe (El Segundo, Calif.), 8-3. Lupone topped Crowley at number three singles, 7-5, 6-1, while Piibe bested Downey at fourth singles, 6-4, 6-3.

First year Ashley Chen (Hilo, Hawaii) (4-5 singles, 4-5 doubles) paired with junior Ashley Pierce (Carver, Mass.) (4-3 singles, 2-2 doubles) at number three doubles in an 8-2 loss to the Mules' senior Holly Bogo (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) and first year Jamie Pine (Providence, R.I.). Bogo downed Chen at number five singles, 6-1, 6-0, while sophomore Katie Ryan (Falmouth, Maine) also posted a 6-1, 6-0 result over Pierce at number six singles.

Simmons returns to the court on Wednesday, October 7 when it hosts Great Northeast Athletic Conference foe Johnson & Wales University at 3:00 p.m. at Harvard University's Beren Tennis Center, while Colby takes on Colby-Sawyer College tomorrow at 9:00 a.m.
