Tennis Falls at Babson, 8-1

BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Simmons College women's tennis team was defeated by host Babson College, 8-1, this afternoon at Farwell Courts in Babson Park, Mass. The Sharks fall to 1-3 on the season, while the Beavers improve to a perfect 4-0.

BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Simmons College women's tennis team was defeated by host Babson College, 8-1, this afternoon at Farwell Courts in Babson Park, Mass. The Sharks fall to 1-3 on the season, while the Beavers improve to a perfect 4-0.

Simmons' lone point came at number one doubles, where junior Theresa Reinhard (Canton, Ohio) (2-2 singles, 4-0 doubles) and senior Meg Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) (3-1 singles, 4-0 doubles) remained undefeated in doubles action with an 8-5 win over Babson's senior Tori Paolino (East Orleans, Mass.) and junior Dina Weick (Woodbridge, Conn.). The Sharks took a 1-0 lead after the point, but the Beavers did not lose for the rest of the afternoon.

Sophomore Yagmur Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey) and first-year Chloe Brandt (Denver, Colo.) posted an 8-2 result at number two over the Sharks duo of senior Rachael Downey (Groveland, Mass.) 1-3 singles, 1-3 doubles) and Ashley Chen (Hilo, Hawaii) (1-3 singles, 1-3 doubles), while sophomore Kylie Kam (Honolulu, Hawaii) and first-year Eleni Gianelos (West Chester, Pa.) were 8-1 winners at number three over the Simmons pair of junior Ashley Pierce (Carver, Mass.) (1-2 singles, 0-1 doubles) and sophomore Mary Matthews (Wakefield, R.I.) 0-1 singles, 1-3 doubles).

Cokely's singles win streak, dating back to last season, was snapped at four straight after Akgul earned a 6-3, 6-0 decision at first singles for Babson. 

Weick, sophomore Claire Foster (Orange, Conn.), Kam and Brandt all won without dropping a game for the Beavers over Chen at third singles, Pierce at number four singles, first year Laura Plaza (Mexico City, Mexico) (0-1 singles) in her collegiate debut at fifth singles and Matthews at sixth singles, respectively. Gianelos was a 6-1, 6-1 winner for Babson at number two over Downey.

The Sharks will be in action again on Sunday, September 13 when they host Great Northeast Athletic Conference foe University of Saint Joseph at 12:00 p.m. in a match to be played at Mount Ida College in Newton, Mass. The Beavers head to Bristol, R.I. tomorrow to take on Roger Williams University at 4:00 p.m.
