Simmons Tennis Sweeps GNAC All-Conference Awards

BOSTON, Mass. ? With five consecutive GNAC women?s tennis championships to its name, Simmons College was the favorite in the 2013 Pre-Season poll, recording 48 out of a possible 49 points with six of seven first place votes. 

BOSTON, Mass. ? Representatives from the Simmons College women's tennis team earned all three of the major honors in the 2013 Great Northeast Athletic Conference All-Conference awards, released this morning by the conference office.

BOSTON, Mass. – Representatives from the Simmons College women's tennis team earned all three of the major honors in the 2013 Great Northeast Athletic Conference All-Conference awards, released this morning by the conference office. Senior Margaret Teague (Manchester, N.H.) was named the GNAC Player of the Year while her first year teammate Theresa Reinhard (Canton, Ohio) was tabbed the GNAC Rookie of the Year. The Sharks head coach, Bob Rauseo, was picked as the Coach of the Year after leading Simmons to a 6-0 conference mark and the team's sixth consecutive GNAC Championship. The University of Saint Joseph (CT) squad was voted the Sportsmanship Team Award.

 

Teague enjoyed an impressive senior campaign playing out of the No. 1 singles and doubles spot for the Sharks. During the regular season, Teague posted a 4-0 singles record in GNAC action while recording a 3-0 doubles record in conference action and an 11-2 overall doubles mark. Overall, Teague collected a total of 22 wins (11 at singles & doubles) en route to leading the Sharks to their sixth straight conference title. Teague was also named to the GNAC First Team All-Conference squad for singles and doubles and was named the 2013 GNAC Women's Tennis tournament MVP.

 

Reinhard dominated for the Sharks out of the No.2 singles spot compiling an 8-3 mark in No. 2 singles action along with a 1-0 record playing in the No. 1 slot, going an undefeated at 4-0 in the GNAC. Playing out of the No. 2 doubles slot, Reinhard notched a total of eight wins. Overall on the year, the rookie was able to register 17 total wins was named to the GNAC First Team All-Conference squad for singles and the 2013 GNAC Women's Tennis All-Tournament Team.

 

Rauseo earns the GNAC Coach of the Year honors for the sixth time in his nine year tenure at Simmons as he also was recognized by the conference in 2005, 2006, 2008, 2011 & 2012. Under his guidance, the Sharks completed the regular season sweep, going 6-0 in league play en route to their sixth straight title after they were able to defeated Johnson & Wales University, 6-1, on Sunday, October 27 for the Championship. Since taking over at Simmons, Rauseo has compiled an overall record of 122-47 while recording an impressive conference mark of 80-2 over that span.

 

With their GNAC Championship victory, the Sharks will compete in the 2014 NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament in the spring.
