WINCHESTER, Mass. -- #1 seed Simmons Tennis defeated the #4 seed Anna Maria AMCATS 9-0 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference semifinal matchup this afternoon at the Winchester Tennis Lawn. The Sharks will play for the GNAC Championship Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM against #2 Johnson & Wales University.
In doubles action, the duo of Margaret Teague (Manchester, N.H.) and Meghan Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) handed Jessica Gautieri and Nicole Goudreau and 8-1 loss at the number one spot, while first years Theresa Reinhard (Canton, Ohio) and Sofie Epshtein (Newton, Mass.) put the Sharks up by two with an 8-2 win over Victoria Minotti and Emily Williamson at number two doubles. Completing the sweep for Simmons was Kristi Mielbye and Caroline Khoury, who defeated Katelyn Edelson and Kayla Buck 8-1 at the number three spot.
With a 3-0 lead, the Sharks continued their dominance in singles play as Teague defeated Gautieri 6-1, 6-0 at the number one spot, Reinhard topped Goudreau 6-1, 6-0 at number two and Cokely earned a 6-2, 6-0 win at number three singles over Minotti. First year Cathy Baker (Simsbury, Conn.) defeated Williamson 6-0, 6-2 at the number four position, while Katie Crowley (Reading, Mass.) and Mielbye swept their competition, 6-0, 6-0.
The semifinal win earns the Sharks a trip to the GNAC Championship on Sunday afternoon against #2 Johnson & Wales University. The defending champion Sharks will look to continue their 57 GNAC match win streak and their sixth consecutive GNAC Championship.
