Sharks Sweep AMCATS in GNAC Tennis Action

PAXTON, Mass. ?Anna Maria College fell to visiting Simmons College, 9-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women?s tennis action on Wednesday afternoon at Paxton Sports Centre. The Sharks remain unbeaten in conference play and improve to 7-3 (3-0 GNAC) while the AMCATS suffer their first conference loss and dip to 6-2 (2-1 GNAC).

PAXTON, Mass. –Anna Maria College fell to visiting Simmons College, 9-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's tennis action on Wednesday afternoon at Paxton Sports Centre. The Sharks remain unbeaten in conference play and improve to 7-3 (3-0 GNAC) while the AMCATS suffer their first conference loss and dip to 6-2 (2-1 GNAC).

In a pre-match ceremony Head Coach Adam Williamson recognized the senior class of Kelly Blake, Emily Williamson and Victoria Minotti for their contributions to AMCAT tennis.

The Sharks duo of sophomore Meghan Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) and freshman Cathy Baker (Simsbury, Conn.) got the afternoon started off right for Simmons, posting a 8-2 victory over AMCATS' freshman Jessica Gautieri (North Attleboro, Mass.) and junior Nicole Goudreau (Harrisville, RI) at the top slot while AMC's Victoria Minotti (Shelton, Conn.) and Emily Williamson (Spencer, Mass.) fell 8-3 at No. 2 doubles. Simmons' Maddie Theoharidis (Sedgwick, Maine) and Rachel Downey (Groverland, Mass.) bested AMCATS Katelyn Edelson (Berlin, Conn.) and Kelly Blake (Southbridge, Mass.) in the third doubles match, 8-2.

In singles action, senior Margaret Teague (Manchester, NH) posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the first singles flight over Gautieri while Theresa Reinhard (Canton, OH) downed AMC's Goudreau, 6-1, 6-0. Anna Maria's Williamson was able to take two games from Downey in the fourth flight but fell 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Katie Crowley and junior Kristi Mielbye both notched shutout victories (6-0, 6-0) at No. 5 and No. 6.

Anna Maria returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Suffolk University for a noontime match.
