Sharks Sweep Mustangs, 9-0

NEWTON, Mass. ? Simmons College dropped just two games as they picked up a 9-0 victory in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's tennis action Saturday afternoon at Mount Ida Tennis Courts.

NEWTON, Mass. – Simmons College dropped just two games as they picked up a 9-0 victory in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's tennis action Saturday afternoon at Mount Ida Tennis Courts.

Mount Ida falls to 0-4 and suffers a conference defeat in the first GNAC match for either side, while the Sharks improve to 5-2 on the season and win their second straight match.

Simmons started off the match by taking all three doubles matches without dropping a game. Caroline Khoury (Portsmouth, Ohio) and Rachael Downey (Groveland, Mass.) were victorious at first doubles over Elizabeth Wood and Jennifer Lord, and Downey also defeated Lord 6-0, 6-1 at the first singles slot.

Katie Crowley (Reading, Mass.) scored a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Jessica Cavcali at second singles and also teamed with Emmalie Snyder (New London, N.H.) to beat Cavcali and Victoria Messinger at second doubles.

The third doubles match saw Ashley Pierce (Carver, Mass.) and Maddie Theoharidis (Sedgwick, Maine) take care of Crissa Branco and Alicia Ritchie.

Wood was the only other Mustang to take a game, as she fell 6-1, 6-0 to Kristi Mielbye (Hanson, Mass.) at third singles.

Mount Ida has another home match on Sunday afternoon, when they welcome in Bay Path College for a non-conference affair.

The Sharks will travel to the ITA Regional Tournament next Friday and then play Albertus Magnus at MIT on Saturday at 1:00 pm in another conference game.
