Tennis Tops Springfield, 6-3

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Simmons Tennis defeated the Springfield College Spirit, 6-3 Saturday afternoon as the Sharks came back to win five of six singles matches for the victory.

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Simmons Tennis fell to MIT in the first round of the NCAA Division III Tournament as the Engineers swept doubles play en route to a 5-0 win Friday afternoon at Bowdoin College.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Simmons Tennis defeated the Springfield College Spirit, 6-3 Saturday afternoon as the Sharks came back to win five of six singles matches for the victory.

In doubles action, Margaret Teague (Manchester, N.H.) and Meghan Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) fell to Sam Carney and Jen Cleary, 9-7. Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) teamed up with Rachael Downey (Groveland, Mass.) to defeat Sydney Streimer and Ashley Duhaime 8-2. But Melanie Thulin and Ariana Shemms defeated Caroline Khoury (Portsmouth, Ohio) and Rachel Sweeney (Norfolk, Mass.), 8-5 to put the Spirit up by one.

The Sharks dominated in singles play as Salmela defeated Cleary, 7-5, 6-0 in the number two spot, Cokely topped Streimer, 6-0, 6-2 in the number three spot and Downey, Katie Crowley (Reading, Mass.) and Casey Gilman (Hampstead, N.H.) each added wins for the Sharks.

With the win, the Sharks move to 14-4 overall record. Simmons faces Roger Williams on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. in their final match before the NCAA Division III tournament beginning May 9.
