Sharks Tie School Record with 15th Win

BOSTON, Mass. - The Great Northeast Athletic Conference has announced the 2012 Women's Tennis Championship Bracket featuring six teams including defending champions, the Simmons College Sharks. After going a perfect 8-0 in GNAC play this year, Simmons has earned the #1 seed and a first round bye in this week's tournament play. Also earning a buy is the #2 seed, the Emerson College Lions, who posted a 6-2 record in GNAC action.

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons Tennis won their final match of the spring, defeating Roger Williams, 8-1 to tie the Simmons school record with 15 wins in a season. The Sharks swept the doubles competition before going five for six in singles as the team prepares for the NCAA tournament in May.

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons Tennis has received 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team honors announced by the national office earlier this month.

In doubles action, Margaret Teague (Manchester, N.H.) and Megan Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) teamed up to defeat Tracy Klein and Samantha Curran, 8-4 in the number one position, while Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) and Rachael Downey (Groveland, Mass.) defeated Lauren Schmidt and Alexandra Brown 9-8(6) in the number two spot. Closing out the sweep at the number three position was Carolien Khoury (Portsmouth, Ohio) and Rachel Sweeney (Norfolk, Mass.), who paired to defeat Adriana Maconochie and Olivia Hilton, 8-6.

In singles play, the Sharks took the top three matches as Teague defeated Klein, 6-0, 6-3, Salmela topped Curran 6-3, 7-5 and Cokely defeated Schmidt, 6-0, 6-3. Brown picked up the lone point for Roger Williams, defeating Downey 6-1, 7-5 in the number four spot but the Khoury and Katie Crowley (Reading, Mass.) closed out their matches to lift the Sharks to a 8-1 victory.

With the win, Simmons moves to 15-4 on the season and will await the NCAA selection process to determine their opponent in the first round on May 9th.
