Tennis Falls to Holy Cross, 5-2

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons Tennis will look to repeat as Great Northeast Athletic Conference Champions for the sixth straight year after an undefeated 8-0 in conference play last season.

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Simmons Tennis fell to Holy Cross, 5-2 in non-conference action Monday afternoon. The Sharks move to 13-4 overall as the team prepares for the NCAA DIII tournament beginning May 9th.

 

The Sharks took two of the doubles matches as Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) and Rachael Downey (Groveland, Mass.) defeated Maya Welch and Abby Henry 8-3 in the number two spot and Caroline Khoury (Portsmouth, Ohio) and Rachel Sweeney (Norfolk, Mass.) defeated Jessica DeSimone and Katie McKenna 8-5 in the number three spot. Playing under Division I rules, the doubles wins count as one point for the Sharks.

 

In singles play, Simmons junior Margaret Teague (Manchester, N.H.) defeated Taylor Stathis 6-2, 6-2 in the number one spot, while the Crusaders swept the remaining singles matches.

 

The Sharks travel to Springfield College on Saturday, Apr. 13th where they will face the Pride at 12:00 p.m. in more non-conference action.
