Tennis Opens 2013 Run with 9-0 Sweep

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Simmons Tennis opened their spring season today with a 9-0 sweep of the Smith College Pioneers in non-conference action.

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Simmons Tennis opened their spring season today with a 9-0 sweep of the Smith College Pioneers in non-conference action.

In doubles action, Margaret Teague (Manchester, N.H.) and Meghan Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) teamed up to defeat Jordan Dubin and Kyle Gouchoe-Hanas 8-2. In second doubles, freshman Caroline Khoury (Portsmouth, Ohio) and Rachel Sweeney (Norfolk, Mass.) defeated Carly Melillo and Victoria von Saucken 8-3 and Casey Gilman (Hampstead, N.H.) and Maddie Theoharidis (Sedgwick, Maine) completed the doubles wins with a close 9-7 match over Seema Samawi and Tessy Lopez. 

In singles play, the Sharks gave up just six sets in all six matches. Teague defeated Dubin 6-0, 6-0 in the first position, Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) defeated Gouchoe-Hanas 6-1, 6-2 in the two spot, Cokely defeated Samawi 6-2, 6-0, while Rachel Downey (Groveland, Mass.) swept Lopez 6-0, 6-0 in the fourth spot. Sweeney defeated Melillo 6-1, 6-0 in the fifth position and Katie Crowley swept Jinan Martiuk 6-0, 6-0 to round out the victory.

The Sharks continue their spring season on Wednesday, April 3rd at Bentley at 4:00 p.m. as they prepare for the NCAA tournament.
