Sharks Clinch #1 Seed in GNAC

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Simmons tennis clinched the #1 seed in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Sunday afternoon as they handed Johnson and Wales their first loss of the season, defeating the Wildcats 8-1 in GNAC action at the Center Courts Tennis Complex.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Simmons tennis clinched the #1 seed in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Sunday afternoon as they handed Johnson and Wales their first loss of the season, defeating the Wildcats 8-1 in GNAC action at the Center Courts Tennis Complex.

Simmons swept all three of the doubles contests and took five of the six singles spots en route to the victory. Margaret Teague (Manchester, N.H.) notched a pair of wins for the visiting Sharks, earning an 8-3 win with Meghan Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) at No. 1 doubles before posting 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles spot. Cokely also had a 6-0, 6-1 win at third singles for Simmons.

Sophomore Darcy Predieri recorded the lone win of the match for Johnson & Wales, posting a 6-3, 2-6, 10-3 win at the sixth singles spot.

With the loss Johnson & Wales is now 9-1 for the season and 4-1 in the GNAC while Simmons improves to 10-1 on the year and 8-0 in league play. The Wildcats return to action on Monday, October 8th when they travel to Emmanuel for a GNAC contest at 3:30 p.m. The Sharks host Brandeis University on the same date at 12:00 p.m. in non-conference action.
