Simmons Tennis Rallies to Defeat Clark University, 5-4

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons tennis led 2-0 after a hard fought doubles competition and took three singles matches to defeat the Clark University Cougars, 5-4, Saturday afternoon at the Winsor School courts.

NEWTON, Mass. -- Simmons tennis picked up their second straight shutout in as many days as the Sharks swept the Mount Ida College Mustangs, 9-0, Sunday afternoon. The Sharks dropped only two sets on the afternoon as they moved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in Great Northeast Athletic conference play.

Simmons junior Margaret Teague (Manchester, N.H.) paired with freshman Meghan Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) to defeat Kortney Kelley and Gaby Suriano 8-6 in the number one doubles position and Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) and Rachael Downey (Groveland, Mass.) defeated Sarah Sachs and Phoebe Hughes 8-3 in the number two spot. Casey Gilman (Hampstead, N.H.) and Katie Crowley (Reading, Mass.) battled Maggie Swann and Lauren Ziemer but fell 9-7 in the third spot.

In singles play, Salmela defeated Sachs 6-2, 6-1 at the number two position, while Cokely and Downey gave the Sharks all they would need to top the Cougars, 5-4.

The Sharks return to the court on September 15th when they open Great Northeast Athletic Conference play against Saint Joseph University at 12:00 p.m.
