Salmela Named GNAC Player of the Week

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons tennis will begin the 2012 season on Saturday after a tremendous 2011 campaign. The Sharks won their seventh consecutive Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship in eight years and finished with an undefeated, 10-0 record in conference play. The team also received its highest ranking ever at #20 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association in June and returned to the NCAA tournament for the fourth straight year.

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons senior Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) was named Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tennis Player of the Week announced Tuesday by the Conference.

Salmela won both of her matches at Albertus Magnus College, notching a 6-0, 6-0 win at the number one singles position along with an 8-0 victory at number one doubles.

At the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) tournament over the weekend, Salmela partnered with freshman Meghan Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) in a 9-8 upset victory over New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opponent Wesleyan University. The win put Salmela atop the all-time wins list at Simmons with 73 victories.

The Sharks return to action this afternoon when they host GNAC rival Emmanuel College at 4:00 p.m.
