Sharks Tennis Edges Mount Holyoke in Final Set for First Win

WEST HARTFORD, Mass. -- Simmons tennis opened Great Northeast Athletic Conference play with a 9-0 win against the University of Saint Joseph Blue Jays Saturday afternoon.

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons tennis cruised to their third consecutive 9-0 victory Wednesday afternoon against Great Northeast Athletic Conference rival Suffolk University at the Winsor School courts.

The Lyons move to 1-1 overall, while the Sharks improve to 1-1 with the victory.

Teague and Han battled through all three sets, with Han falling 7-6 (8-6) in the first set before posting a 6-4 victory of her own in the second set, which was moved indoors due to darkness. Yet it was Teague who prevailed in the third set, pulling out a 6-1 win to give Simmons the 5-4 victory.

The Sharks came out firing to open the doubles action, with Teague and Meghan Cokely (Haverhill, Mass.) defeating Han and AnnElizabeth Konkel 8-3 in the first position while Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) and Rachael Downey (Groveland, Mass.) defeated Kelsey Brower and Jenni Lee, 8-4 in the second. Mount Holyoke's third flight duo of first year Margaux Holloschutz and senior My-Linh Nguyen earned the Lyons' lone point in the opening with an 8-5 victory.

In the singles action, Holloschutz continued to shine, posting a 6-3, 6-2 win over Simmons first year Katie Crowley (Reading, Mass.) in the sixth flight. The Lyons went on to claim the fourth and fifth flights as well with juniors Eman Malik and Maya Sayarath each recording victories.

Simmons retaliated to make it an even match as Cokely volleyed past Lyons sophomore Sarah Anischik by a 6-3, 6-3 margin in the third flight. The Sharks then tied things up when Salmela defeated Konkel, 6-4, 6-4 in the second flight.

Simmons returns to action on Wednesday, September 5th in a 3:30 p.m. match at Babson.
