Sharks Hold Off Mount Holyoke, 6-3

Simmons Tennis was swept by non-conference hosts Wheaton College, 9-0, during Saturday's opener for both squads at the Clark Tennis Courts. Both teams competed in the 2010 NCAA Tournament, but the Lyons got the best of the Sharks on the day. With the loss, Simmons drops to 0-1 overall, while Wheaton advances to 1-0 on the season.

Powered by a doubles sweep, the Simmons tennis team topped Mount Holyoke College 6-3 this evening at the Mount Holyoke Field House. It was the Sharks? fifth consecutive win and their first over the Lyons since the 2007-08 season.

Simmons Tennis served up a big win over visiting NESCAC team Colby College, 6-3, on Monday?s Senior Day match. Seniors Katy Hallinan (Maynard, Mass.) and Maile Macleod (Carlsbad, Calif.) both captured big wins at #2 and #3 singles, respectively, to help boost the Sharks past the Mules.

Powered by a doubles sweep, the Simmons tennis team topped Mount Holyoke College 6-3 this evening at the Mount Holyoke Field House. It was the Sharks' fifth consecutive win and their first over the Lyons since the 2007-08 season.

First year Margaret Teague (Manchester, N.H.), senior Maile Macleod (Carlsbad, Calif.) and first year Allison Bodek (Lynnfield, Mass.) each picked up victories at both singles and doubles to lead the way for the guests.

Simmons exploded out of the gate, winning all three doubles matches 8-2. Macleod and sophomore Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) teamed up at the number one spot, while Teague and first year Andree Sime (Bradenton, Fla.) occupied the number two slot. Bodek and junior Maggie Taylor (Yarmouth, Maine) rounded things out at the number three position.

Refusing to go away, Mount Holyoke battled back on the singles side. Maya Sayarath (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) got the Lyons on the board with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the number five slot, and sophomore Nahrhee Han (Albertson, N.Y.) won her number one contest by default.

Teague then wrapped up a 6-0, 6-1 victory in her number two contest to extend the Simmons lead to 4-2.

With the outcome of the match still undecided, Bodek held off first year AnnElizabeth Konkel (Camp Hill, Pa.) 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 in her number four tilt to seal things for the Sharks.

Mount Holyoke's third point came from junior Sarah Moore (Plano, Texas), who came out on top 7-6 (11-9), 6-4 at the number six position.

Meanwhile, Macleod edged junior Heather Richardson (Holden, Mass.) 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-2 at the number three slot to close out the night.

Both squads are slated to resume their league schedules on Saturday. Mount Holyoke (1-4, 1-2 NEWMAC) will visit MIT at 1:00 p.m., while Simmons (6-3, 4-0 GNAC) will travel to St. Joseph College at noon.
