Five Simmons Tennis athletes have been named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference All-Conference Team, the GNAC announced on Monday. The honors follow Simmons? third straight GNAC Championship and sixth in seven years, following the Sharks? defeat of Emerson College in Sunday?s tournament finals and a perfect 8-0 regular season conference record.

Simmons Tennis has been ranked 20th among the NCAA Division III Northeast programs, jumping four spots from the #24 ranking the team achieved in spring 2010. The latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) ranking follows the Sharks? third consecutive Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship in 2010, the team?s sixth title in seven years.

Simmons College Tennis will travel to Amherst, Mass. on May 13, 2011 for the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships. Simmons will face New Paltz at Amherst College, as announced Monday afternoon by the NCAA. The winner of that match will take on top-ranked Amherst (16-2) in the second round on Saturday. The start time has yet to be announced.

Simmons Tennis was named a 2011 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III All-Academic Team for the fourth year in a row, the ITA announced. In addition, seven sharks received Scholar-Athlete honors for maintaining a 3.5 or greater GPA for the 2010-11 academic year.

"This year is shaping up to be another good year," said Head Coach Bob Rauseo. "We should be a bit stronger than last year. "We would like to win the conference again. It won't be easy though, as most of the teams are returning their better players. We will also look to improve on our ITA ranking."

The Sharks' returning players will lead a class of talented freshmen in achieving their goal of another GNAC title. The 2009 GNAC Rookie and Player of the Year, Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.), went undefeated in conference #1 singles play, and combined with Maile Macleod (Carlsbad, Calif.) to win a key doubles match in the NCAA first round.

Macleod and Katy Hallinan (Maynard, Mass.) will provide senior leadership, and along with junior Maggie Taylor (Yarmouth, Maine), will serve as team captains.

The returners will be joined by a very strong recruiting class of four freshmen. "I would not be surprised to see freshmen in the starting line-up," said Coach Rauseo. "If we stay healthy, we will be very competitive. As always, it our biggest asset will be our depth."

Simmons Tennis will open the season on Saturday, September 4 at Wheaton, and will host their home and GNAC opener on Thursday, September 16 at 4:00pm as they battle the Saints of Emmanuel College.
