Tennis Named 2011 ITA All-Academic Team

Simmons Tennis returns in 2010 after the most successful season in school history last year. The Sharks captured the 2009 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship title for the fifth time in six years after a dominating 8-0 regular season GNAC performance. Simmons also achieved a #24 Northeast Ranking from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association?their highest ever?and advanced to the round of 32 in the spring 2010 NCAA Tournament.

Five Simmons Tennis athletes have been named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference All-Conference Team, the GNAC announced on Monday. The honors follow Simmons? third straight GNAC Championship and sixth in seven years, following the Sharks? defeat of Emerson College in Sunday?s tournament finals and a perfect 8-0 regular season conference record.

Simmons Tennis has been ranked 20th among the NCAA Division III Northeast programs, jumping four spots from the #24 ranking the team achieved in spring 2010. The latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) ranking follows the Sharks? third consecutive Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship in 2010, the team?s sixth title in seven years.

Simmons College Tennis will travel to Amherst, Mass. on May 13, 2011 for the first round of the 2011 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships. Simmons will face New Paltz at Amherst College, as announced Monday afternoon by the NCAA. The winner of that match will take on top-ranked Amherst (16-2) in the second round on Saturday. The start time has yet to be announced.

Simmons Tennis was named a 2011 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III All-Academic Team for the fourth year in a row, the ITA announced. In addition, seven sharks received Scholar-Athlete honors for maintaining a 3.5 or greater GPA for the 2010-11 academic year.

For senior Katy Hallinan (Maynard, Mass.), this marks her fourth Scholar-Athlete honor, while Athena Lynch (Andover, Mass.) received her third nod and Maggie Taylor (Yarmouth, Maine) received her second honor. Allison Bodek (Lynnfield, Mass.), Maile Macleod (Carlsbad, Calif.), Andreé Simé (Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadaloupe) and Margaret Teague (Manchester, N.H.) are all first time Scholar-Athlete recipients.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). Simmons Tennis has received All-Academic Team recognition annually since the 2007-08 season.

The 2011-12 Simmons Tennis season will begin on Saturday, September 3, when the Sharks host NEWMAC opponent Wheaton College at home at 12:00pm.
