Simmons Tennis was swept by non-conference hosts Wheaton College, 9-0, during Saturday's opener for both squads at the Clark Tennis Courts. Both teams competed in the 2010 NCAA Tournament, but the Lyons got the best of the Sharks on the day. With the loss, Simmons drops to 0-1 overall, while Wheaton advances to 1-0 on the season.
Wheaton's regionally ranked doubles tandem of seniors Sarah Geocaris and Catherine Teague set the early tone with an 8-3 victory over Sharks junior Athena Lynch (Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) in the top slot.
The Sharks turned in a pair of 8-4 losses to complete the doubles matches, with Maile Macleod (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Maggie Taylor (Yarmouth, Maine) falling to Lyndsay Cooke and Madison Hartley in the second position and Allison Bodek (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Katy Hallinan (Maynard, Mass.) dropping the #3 doubles to Ellen Van Faasen and Allesandra DiOrio. The Sharks were also bested in all six singles matches.
The Sharks will return to action on Thursday, September 9, when they host Clark at 5:00pm. The Lyons will also face Clark in their next matchup on Saturday, September 11.
