Simmons College Tennis closes out the spring 2011 season after a defeat at the hands of New Paltz State in the NCAA Northeast Regional Tournament on Friday, May 13 at Amherst College. The Sharks gave up a 5-3 loss to the Hawks, exiting the tournament after the first round.

Freshmen Margaret Teague (Manchester, N.H.) and Allison Bodek (Lynnfield, Mass.) accounted for all three of Simmons' points—winning together at doubles and each winning handily at singles.

Following a 2-1 Hawks lead after the doubles competition, Bodek defeated Alli Esposito at No. 5 singles to tie the score. Senior Maile Macleod (Carlsbad, Calif.) fell to Kayla DiPaulo, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4 singles to put New Paltz on top, 3-2, but Teague knotted the tally at 3-all with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over senior Stephanie Schara at No. 1 singles.

Paige Munroe picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win over junior Maggie Taylor (Yarmouth, Maine) at No. 6 singles, while Katy Hallinan (Maynard, Mass.) fell to Lindsey Garyn at No. 3 singles, with New Paltz taking the deciding point, 6-1, 7-5.

After the deciding point was won, the match was called due to the NCAA Championship format. New Paltz's Montana Wilson led Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.), 6-3, 3-6, 2-1, at No. 2 singles when the match was decided.

The match ends the collegiate careers of senior captains Macleod and Hallinan. Macleod will graduate this spring as the program's all-time leader in victories (singles/doubles combined) with 77. Hallinan and Macleod end up tied for second in all-time singles victories with 40 each.

"Although we're disappointed with the outcome of the match, we gave it everything we had," said Head Coach Bob Rauseo. "Obviously, the freshmen showed us that the future looks bright, and the seniors graduate with careers that no one could have predicted four years ago. They will certainly be missed, but they leave us with an everlasting memory of how the game should be played."
