Tennis Sweeps Weekly GNAC Honors

Maile Macleod (Carlsbad, Calif.) was named Player of the Week and freshman Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) earned Rookie of the Week Honors for the second week in a row, the Great Northeast Athletic Conference announced on Monday evening.

Simmons junior Maile Macleod (Carlsbad, Calif.) has been named Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tennis Player of the Week, and freshman Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) was named GNAC Tennis Rookie of the Week, the conference announced on Monday evening. This is the second POW honor for Macleod this season, while Salmela has swept ROW honors for each of the five weeks of the fall 2009 season.

Maile Macleod (Carlsbad, Calif.) was named Player of the Week and freshman Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) earned Rookie of the Week Honors for the second week in a row, the Great Northeast Athletic Conference announced on Monday evening.

Macleod had a week to remember for the Sharks. She followed up a doubles win over Pine Manor with an upset over Colby College's #1 player at the ITA Regional Championships. It was Simmons first-ever main draw win at the ITA. Macleod then ended the week by picking up singles and doubles wins from the top position against Saint Joseph Connecticut.

"Maile's win over a Colby player is not only a good Simmons win; it is a good GNAC win," said Head Coach Bob Rauseo. "Any win over a player from the best conference in the country is good for the GNAC."

Salmela went 3-0 in the GNAC this week. She also had an upset win at the ITA Championship over Elizabeth Anderson of Vassar College, the 21st ranked team in the nation.

"Sabrina's surprisingly easy win over a player on a top 25 national team gives an early look to her potential," said Rauseo. "Three weeks into her collegiate career, she's already starting to make a name for herself."

Tennis will return to the courts on Thursday, September 24 at 4:00pm, when Simmons hosts UMass Dartmouth at home.
