Salmela Named GNAC Player of the Week

Simmons Tennis battled Mount Holyoke College for four and a half hours Thursday night, coming up short on the evening to endure a 5-4 non-conference loss. Simmons falls to 6-4 overall, while remaining a perfect 4-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, while the Lyons improve to 2-3 overall, 1-2 NEWMAC.

Simmons freshman Sabrina Salmela (Beverly, Mass.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday evening. This is the first POW honor for Salmela this season, who has swept Rookie honors for each of the six weeks of the fall 2009 season.

The honors come after a week in which Salmela defeated previously undefeated Taylor Dey of Emmanuel, finishing the GNAC regular season as the only undefeated #1 singles player, and boosting Simmons to the number one spot in the conference. In addition, Salmela had a doubles win over Colby and a singles win against Bates at the NEWITT tournament.
