Tennis Ranked 24th in Northeast by ITA

Simmons Tennis captured the 2009 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women?s Tennis Championship on Sunday, besting #2 seed Suffolk University 6-0 to take the title for the fifth time in six years. The GNAC Championship caps a perfect 8-0 conference record for the Sharks in 2009.

Simmons Tennis has been ranked 24th among Northeast Division III programs, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced on Wednesday. The ranking is the highest-ever for Simmons, previously ranked 25th in spring 2009.

"It is fitting to have this team receive the highest ITA ranking in school history," said Head Coach Bob Rauseo. "The ITA obviously looked favorably at our nonconference schedule of NEWMAC, NESCAC and UAA opponents. We are honored to be on the list with so many strong programs."

The announcement places Simmons just ahead of teams from William Smith and St. Lawrence, and comes after a fall season in which the Sharks captured the 2009 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament Championship for the fifth time in six years, capping a perfect 8-0 conference record.

With the title, Simmons Tennis earns a spot in the in the spring 2010 NCAA tournament, to be held May 14-16. Simmons will play a preparation match against Smith College on April 24, 2010.
