Tennis Team Set to Compete for GNAC Title

Simmons Tennis is preparing to open the 2008 season riding on the momentum of last season?s successes. The Sharks finished the year ranked 25th in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association?s Northeast fall rankings, a program best. In addition, the Simmons Tennis program was selected as a 2008 All-Academic Team, another program first.

On October 17 -18, 2008 the Simmons College tennis team traveled to Western Massachusetts to participate in the New England Women?s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT). The team played very well, winning in both singles and doubles competition.

The Simmons tennis team was awarded the No. 1 seed in the 2008 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tennis Tournament.  The Sharks completed the regular season with a 9-5 overall record, and first place finish in the GNAC Conference with a 7-0 league mark.

"We're very excited for the GNAC tournament," said Head Coach Bob Rauseo.  "Not only are we coming off of a great showing at the NEWITT, we're healthy which is a bonus at this point in the season.  At this point, we're only concerned with playing the Emerson.  It should be a good match."

As the top seed in the GNAC Tournament, Simmons will play host to fifth seed Emerson College who defeated Emmanuel, 5-3 yesterday.  Simmons will kick off its 12th appearance in the GNAC Tournament on Saturday, October 25 at 5:30 p.m. at the Winchester Indoor Club in Winchester, Mass. 

Emerson finished the regular season with a 6-6 overall record, 3-4 in conference play.  Simmons defeated Emerson, 8-1, in their regular season match on October 11.  The winner will advance to the conference finals to face the winner of the #2 Suffolk/#3 Johnson and Wales match, the finals will be played on Sunday, October 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Weymouth Club in Weymouth, Mass.

Simmons has won three GNAC Conference Tennis Championships, most recently in 2006.  Last year, Simmons lost to Suffolk University, 5-4, in the conference championship.
