Tennis Competes in New England Women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament

Simmons Tennis is preparing to open the 2008 season riding on the momentum of last season?s successes. The Sharks finished the year ranked 25th in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association?s Northeast fall rankings, a program best. In addition, the Simmons Tennis program was selected as a 2008 All-Academic Team, another program first.

On October 17 -18, 2008 the Simmons College tennis team traveled to Western Massachusetts to participate in the New England Women?s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT). The team played very well, winning in both singles and doubles competition.

The Simmons tennis team was awarded the No. 1 seed in the 2008 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tennis Tournament.  The Sharks completed the regular season with a 9-5 overall record, and first place finish in the GNAC Conference with a 7-0 league mark.

On October 17 -18, 2008 the Simmons College tennis team traveled to Western Massachusetts to participate in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT). The team played very well, winning in both singles and doubles competition.

The Sharks played particularly well in singles competition at the NEWITT. Four members of the Simmons tennis team battled to pick up victories for the Sharks. Sophomore Maile Macleod (Carlsbad, Calif.) and senior Stacey Kohan (Milford, Conn.) both beat their opponents from Connecticut College, 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 and 6-4, 6-2 respectively. Also getting a first round victory was freshman Maggie Taylor (Yarmouth, Maine) who won 6-2, 6-0 against her opponent from Clark University. Sophomore Katy Hallinan (Lakeville, Mass.) advanced to the third round for the Sharks, beating her opponent from Babson College 6-2, 6-1 in the first round and winning 6-4, 6-3 against her opponent from Smith College in the second round of competition.

In doubles competition the Sharks were able to come away with one win. Freshman Liza Pope (West Newbury, Mass.) and Maggie Taylor teamed up to defeat their opponents from Clark University 8-3.

"The NEWITT was particularly exciting this year because we were able to post individual wins against such strong programs as Connecticut College, Smith and Babson," said Head Coach Bob Rauseo. "We ended up with 5 singles wins which exceeded our expectations".
