Tennis Duo Claims Weekly GNAC Honors

Simmons sophomore Maile Macleod (Carlsbad, Calif.) was named GNAC Player of the Week and freshman Maggie Taylor (Yarmouth, Maine) was named the GNAC Rookie of the Week for outstanding performances in Simmons? GNAC Tournament victory, the conference announced on Monday.

 Simmons sophomore Maile Macleod (Carlsbad, Calif.) was named GNAC Player of the Week and freshman Maggie Taylor (Yarmouth, Maine) was named the GNAC Rookie of the Week for outstanding performances in Simmons' GNAC Tournament victory, the conference announced on Monday.

Macleod had an outstanding GNAC tournament in both doubles and singles play. The doubles duo of Macleod and senior Stacey Kohan (Milford, Conn.) defeated competition from Emerson (8-5) to help Simmons advance to the finals. Macleod played in the number 2 singles spot for the Sharks in the championship match against Johnson and Wales. She defeated Erienne Gale in a tough match 7-6, 6-1, to help the Sharks clinch the victory.

Taylor went 4-0 in the GNAC tournament, a big boost to the Sharks' Championship. In the semifinal match against Emerson, she won her singles match 6-1, 6-1. She then teamed up with doubles partner, freshman Liza Pope (West Newbury, Mass.), to defeat Kate Sitarz and Kelly McCarthy from Emerson, 8-2. In the Championship match against Johnson and Wales, Taylor defeated Jessica Cohen 6-1, 6-0 in singles competition, and went on to team up with Pope for another doubles victory, 8-2.

Maile Macleod and Maggie Taylor were both named to the GNAC All Conference second team following the conclusion of the tennis regular season.
