Two World Records were set at the inaugural October Swim Fest, a Masters swimming mini-meet hosted by Simmons College Swimming and Diving on Saturday, October 18.
48 Simmons College student-athletes were recognized as Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Academic All-Conference selections for the 2007-08 season.
Simmons College announced a new addition to the coaching staff on Monday, when it hired Mindy Williams as the new head coach of the Swimming and Diving team.
The Simmons College swimming and diving team had one of its most successful seasons in the program's history in 2006-07. The Sharks took home their fifth Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship in the past six years, won the Regis Invitational for the first time and posted a 9-1 mark in dual meets, besting the existing school standard.
The Simmons College swimming and diving team proved to be the best in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference back at the conference championships in December. This week the accolades continued to pour in as junior Keri Ann Arsenault (Chester, N.H.,) was named the GNAC Swimmer of the year, and head coach Doug Backlund was honored as the conference coach of the year. "It is a wonderful testament to the Simmons Swimming & Diving program that in one year junior captain Keri-Ann Arsenault is awarded Swimmer of the Year and Coach Backlund, Coach of the Year. The two, not surprisingly, have earned these awards together, in the same year," Simmons College Athletic Director Ali Kantor said. "Together Keri-Ann and Doug bring many honors to Simmons Swimming & Diving."
After the final event of the 2008 New England Swimming Championships last weekend, an era came to a close for the Simmons College swimming and diving team. Longtime head coach Doug Backlund had coached his final collegiate meet. The 11 year veteran had chosen to retire from college coaching after the season had completed.
The Simmons College swimming and diving team closed out a terrific season this weekend with a 10th place finish at the New England Championships, held at UMass-Dartmouth.
Simmons College junior Swimmer Keri-Ann Aresenault earned Great Northeast Athletic Conference Swimmer of the week honors for her efforts in the Sharks dual meet finale against Plymouth State.
The Simmons College swimming and diving team wrapped up its dual meet season on Saturday in style by overcoming an early deficit to clinch a 154-138 win over Plymouth St. The Sharks trailed 72-56 after the first seven events and things were not looking good, but the team pulled it all together over the final nine events, to make a resounding comeback.
The Simmons College swimming and diving team got back into action on Saturday and closed out the home portion of their schedule in style with a 154-125 win over Mt. Holyoke. The Sharks were coming off a week of training in Florida and it looked as though it had done some good after the long holiday layover.
