Janiak, Zoldy Lead Basketball over Lyndon State, 66-44

BOSTON, Mass. ? Junior guard Jennifer Janiak (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored a game-high 17 points and sophomore point guard Jamie Zoldy (Watertown, Conn.) finished an assist shy of her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high nine assists to lead the Simmons College women?s basketball team to a 66-44 victory over visiting Lyndon State College this evening at Moore Gymnasium in Boston, Mass.

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior guard Jennifer Janiak (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored a game-high 17 points and sophomore point guard Jamie Zoldy (Watertown, Conn.) finished an assist shy of her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high nine assists to lead the Simmons College women's basketball team to a 66-44 victory over visiting Lyndon State College this evening at Moore Gymnasium in Boston, Mass. The Sharks win their third straight game, for their longest win streak since four-game string to open the 2010-11 season, and improve to 4-7 on the season, while the Hornets fall to 1-8. 

Simmons held Lyndon State to just 31% (18-58) shooting from the floor and forced the Hornets into 30 turnovers. 

The teams played within four points of each other with six lead changes and four ties in the first 17 minutes of play. The Sharks owned a 24-22 lead with 2:58 to go in the half, before ripping off nine unanswered points, including a pair of three-pointers from Janiak and a trey from junior forward Gracie Rolfe (Newton, Mass.) to beat the first half buzzer and give the home team a 33-22 lead at the intermission. 

Simmons carried its momentum into the second half, scoring nine of the first 12 points to increase its lead to 42-25 with 17:19 showing in the second stanza. A jump shot from Lyndon State junior guard Allison Brown (Monroe, N.H.) later cut the deficit to 44-31 with 13:30 to go in the contest, but the Sharks put together a 14-5 stretch to extend their advantage to 58-36 with 8:10 remaining in the game. First year forward Presley Silva (Wilmington, Mass.) later made a layup to give Simmons its largest lead of the night at 62-38 with 4:27 left on the second half clock, before coming away with the victory. 

Janiak added five rebounds and four steals to her night for the Sharks, while Zoldy came up with four steals of her own in addition to four rebounds. Sophomore forward Liz Brasa (East Hartford, Conn.) chipped in with 10 points, five boards and an assist and Rolfe finished with eight points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal. Silva and classmate Celina Jones (Milford, Mass.) each went 3-4 from the field to net seven and six points, respectively. 

Senior guard Emily Gray (Quincy, Mass.) led the Hornets with 11 points in addition to a rebound, two steals and an assist, while first year center Mikayla Hodge (Newbury, Vt.) came off the bench to score 10 points, pull down seven caroms, dish out three assists and make a steal in 23 minutes of action. First year guard Abby Salvadore (Portsmouth, N.H.) contributed with seven points and five rebounds in 19 minutes. 

Simmons returns to the hardwood on Saturday, January 10 when it hosts Manhattanville College at 1:00 p.m. at Moore Gymnasium, while Lyndon State heads to Johnson, Vt. to take on Johnson State College on the same day at 1:00 p.m.
