Simmons Topped by Suffolk in GNAC Action, 74-49

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons basketball dropped their 2012-2013 home opener to the Clark University Cougars, 68-49 Tuesday evening at the Holmes Sports Center. The Sharks (0-3) tied the game twice during the second half but were unable to hang on as the Clark improved to 3-0.

WALTHAM, Mass. ? Simmons basketball fell to the Brandeis University Judges 69-37 Tuesday evening in non-conference action. Brandeis was led by junior guard Kasey Dean, who scored a game-high 12 points on 5-of-10 from the floor. Dean also finished with a game- and season-high six assists, two shy of a career-best. 

BOSTON, Mass. ? A huge game from Kristin Brice for 20 points and 15 rebounds led the way Saturday afternoon as the Emerson Women's Basketball Team edged the Simmons Sharks 62-57 in overtime. With the win the Lions improve to 5-9 on the year and 1-2 in conference play as the Sharks fall to 2-9 overall and 0-1 in the GNAC.

Freshman Jen Janiak (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished the night with a team-high 14 points for the Sharks, highlighted by a 3-for-8 performance from beyond the arc. 

Junior Hannah May (Hamden, Conn.) chipped in with eight points on the night for Simmons, while freshman Nicole Alberghini (Northborough, Mass.) led all players with eight rebounds.

Each team finished the night even on the glass collecting 39 rebounds.

Sophomore Shelby Santini paced the offense for the Rams as she finished the evening with a team-high 14 points. Santini also grabbed five steals in the game as the Suffolk defense forced 25 Sharks turnovers in the game which they translated into 29 points. 

Prior to the game Suffolk honored their two senior members of the team, Jacqueline Vienneau and Lindsey Rogers. The duo combined for 21 points on the night. 

Both teams will round out their regular seasons on Saturday afternoon with GNAC action. Simmons will host Norwich University at 12:30 p.m. while Suffolk (10-1 GNAC) will travel to Emmanuel College (11-0 GNAC) for a 3:00 p.m. showdown with the Saints in a winner take all regular season finale. 

Both teams also took part in the "Play 4 Kay" Pink-Zone Breast Cancer Awareness initiative as they donned pink warm-up shirts prior to the 7:00pm tip-off this evening. The event is in honor of the former North Carolina State Head Coach, Kay Yow, who battled courageously with the disease before passing away in 2009. GNAC Women's Basketball teams have hosted these events throughout the month of February in collaboration with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
