Sharks Fall to Wildcats 62-50 in GNAC Action

PROVIDENCE, R.I. ? The Johnson & Wales University women?s basketball defeated the Simmons Sharks, 62-50 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Wildcat Center on Saturday afternoon.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.  The Johnson & Wales University women's basketball defeated the Simmons Sharks, 62-50 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at the Wildcat Center on Saturday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales was paced by junior Jenna Juron with 13 points, four assists and three rebounds while senior Marina Milian added 10 points and six rebounds in the victory.  Senior Chrissy Toth was also in double-figures with 11 points for the Wildcats. 

Freshman Jen Janiak (Chelmsford, Mass.) led the way for Simmons with 15 points while junior Hannah May (Hamden, Conn.) added 12 points and five boards in the setback for the Sharks.

 

Johnson & Wales took control of the game early and led 19-7 after a pair of free throws by Milian with 11:00 left in the first half.  Simmons responded, however and used an 11-2 run to cut the lead to 21-18 on a jumper by Janiak with 6:49 remaining in the stanza.  JWU then closed the half with a 14-8 run of their own to take the 35-26 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

 

Johnson & Wales pushed their lead to 51-36 on a layup by Milian with just over nine minutes left in the contest.  Simmons cut the lead to 57-50 on a jumper by Janiak with three minutes remaining, but that would be as close as the Sharks would get, however as JWU held on for the 62-50 victory.

 

With the win Johnson & Wales improves to 9-11 for the year and 4-3 in the GNAC while Simmons falls to 4-14 overall and 2-6 in league play.  The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, February 5th when they travel to Suffolk for a GNAC contest at 6:00 p.m. The Sharks host GNAC foe Emmanuel on the same date at 7:00 p.m.
