BOSTON, Mass. – A huge game from Kristin Brice for 20 points and 15 rebounds led the way Saturday afternoon as the Emerson Women's Basketball Team edged the Simmons Sharks 62-57 in overtime. With the win the Lions improve to 5-9 on the year and 1-2 in conference play as the Sharks fall to 2-9 overall and 0-1 in the GNAC.
The Sharks found their footing early in the first half, taking early lead and shooting 34% from the floor with Olivia LaCroix (Manchester, N.H.) powering in eight points.
The Lions surged back after the early run by Simmons with Kristin Brice putting in eight of her own and Shannon Norton coming off the bench to drop seven. Emerson's rebounding kept them in the hunt as well, pulling down 21 boards to the Sharks' 15 with nine points coming off second chances. The Sharks entered halftime with a slight 24-23 lead.
The second half saw the Lions take the reigns from the Sharks, shooting 38% from the floor as Brice and Elissa Chojnicki each put up eight points for the Lions. Liz O'Connor (Milton, Mass.) kept Simmons alive with her double-double, as the Sharks outrebounded Emerson 20-to-15 with seven offensive boards by O'Connor alone.
There were several lead changes throughout the half, but the Sharks capitalized on Emerson's 12 turnovers, resulting in a nine-point conversion. The Sharks also scrapped 10 point in the paint with a last second lay-up by LaCroix knotting the game at 50 and sending it to OT.
In overtime, the Lions took immediate control of the scoreboard and never looked back, capitalizing on the Simmons foul trouble, with the Lions going 8-for-12 to edge away with the 62-57 final.
The Lions will return to action this week as they set to host Norwich Tuesday night as GNAC action rolls on. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Boston at Emerson's Brown-Plofker Gym. The Sharks return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Saint Joseph's College (Maine) for a 5:30 p.m. start.
