BOSTON, Mass. -- The Wellesley College Blue (1-2) picked up their first win of the 2012-2013 season, defeating the Simmons Sharks 49-28 in non-conference action Monday evening. The Blue, who lead by ten at halftime, took control in the second half, outshooting the Sharks for the victory.
After a slow start for both teams, Wellesley found their offensive rhythm. Malia Maier led the Blue with seven points in the half, while Kendall Bianchi came off the bench to add six more. Ashleigh Sargent added six rebounds to pace the Blue's defense.
The Sharks (0-4) kept the score within four when Gracie Rolfe (Newton, Mass.) buried two quick shots late in the half. Chanel Thomas (Phoenix, Ariz.) paced the Sharks defense with three rebounds and two steals but the Blue maintained the lead into halftime, 21-11.
In the second half, Wellesley outshot the Sharks from the floor, going 9-29 to the Sharks 5-20. Sargent and Katie Schulenburger each picked up five points and Courtney Jackson, Meghan Sargent and Scott each added four for the Blue.
Liz O'Connor (Milton, Mass.) stepped up for the Sharks, scoring eight of her ten points in the second half. Hannah May (Hamden, Conn.) went 1-1 from behind the arc off a crisp pass from Thomas to finish the game with seven points.
The Sharks return to action on Monday, December 3rd at Wentworth at 7:00 p.m., while the Blue open their NEWMAC conference play at home versus MIT on November 28th at 7:00 p.m.
