Sharks Triumph Over Mustangs, 57-50

Simmons Basketball recovered from a seven-point first half deficit for a 57-50 win over Great Northeast Athletic Conference visitor Mount Ida College on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Liz O?Connor (Milton, Mass.) went on a rampage in the final three minutes, scoring seven consecutive points to rally the Sharks and push them past the Mustangs. With the victory, Simmons advances to 8-11 on the season (3-5 GNAC), while Mount Ida falls to 5-12 overall (2-4 GNAC).

Simmons Basketball fell to Rivier College on Tuesday night, 55-53, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference matchup at the Holmes Sports Center in their final game of the season. With the loss, Simmons drops to 9-14 overall (4-8 GNAC) while the Raiders improve to 6-17 (4-6 GNAC).

O'Connor had a total of 17 points, followed closely by classmate Emily Thomas (Cheshire, Conn.) with a 16-point, 10-rebound double double. Junior Alex Acloque (Randolph, Mass.) and freshman Hannah May (Hamden, Conn.) each chipped in six points, while Acloque also grabbed 16 boards. Co-captain Liane Lantagne (Haverhill, Mass.), celebrating senior day, contributed six rebounds, two points and one block.

The Sharks entered halftime trailing the Mustangs, 34-27. With about thirteen minutes remaining in the second half, Simmons managed to claw back into the game, just one point behind Mount Ida, 41-40, and finally pulled ahead at 11:27 to go when a Thomas layup put the Sharks ahead, 42-41.

Mount Ida answered back with a jumper from Jeileen Rivera to draw ahead again, 43-42. But two points from an O'Connor layup at 9:41 to go pushed Simmons ahead, 44-43, and the Sharks held the lead for the remainder of the contest.

Mount Ida had three starters in double-digits—Katie Morvan posting 18 points, Rivera tallying 11 and Abigail Fedigan scoring 10 for the Mustangs.

Simmons will travel to their next contest, a 7:00pm GNAC matchup at Emerson College on Tuesday, February 2. Mount Ida will host Rivier for a GNAC game on the same day at 6:00pm.
