Sharks Best Engineers, 48-41

Simmons Basketball rang in the New Year on Saturday, January 2, as they turned in a victory over visiting MIT, 48-41, at the Holmes Sports Center. Senior guard Julianna Eagles (Quincy, Mass.) scored a game high 11 points to help boost the Sharks in the hotly contested matchup. With the win, Simmons advances to 7-3 (0-0 GNAC), while MIT falls to 2-8 (0-4 NEWMAC).

Eagles was assisted by senior teammates Aubree Giarrosso (Rockport, Mass.) and Stephanie Fox (West Springfield, Mass.), each contributing 9 points each. Fox also had seven boards, six assists and six blocks in the win. Freshman guard Liz O'Connor (Milton, Mass.) grabbed four rebounds and nailed seven points for the Sharks.

The Engineers' freshman Anna Merrifield (Honolulu, Hawaii) was everywhere at once, achieving a double double of 16 boards and 10 points with two assists. Right by her side was junior forward Kristen Whaley (Westborough, Mass.) with 10 points, and freshman guard Aparna Sud (Wellesley, Mass.) with nine points.

Simmons will travel to face Lesley University on January 7, 2010 at 8:00pm. Next, Simmons will host Summer Camp Day on Saturday, January 9, 2010 when they face Suffolk University. All 2009 Summer Campers, their families and friends, are welcomed back to cheer on the Sharks in their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference game of the season.
